FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – The City of Fort Wayne’s Public Works Division plans to utilize American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds to resurface streets that fall within qualified census tracts. Streets that will get a facelift are mainly in southeast and southwest Fort Wayne.
The City issued the following:
Under section 42(d)(5)(C) of the U.S. Code, a Qualified Census Tract is any census tract (or equivalent geographic area defined by the Bureau of the Census) in which at least 50% of households have an income less than 60% of the Area Median Gross Income.
The streets being resurfaced, located in the southeast and southwest areas of Fort Wayne, have now been identified. Earlier this week the Board of Public Works approved the plan which will go to City Council for approval in the coming weeks. The resurfacing packages total approximately $600,000.
The resurfacing packages are part of the City’s record plan of nearly $50 million in neighborhood infrastructure projects this year. Since 2014, the City has invested more than $340 million in neighborhood infrastructure enhancements.
Earlier this year City Council approved neighborhood resurfacing packages for the City’s four quadrants that totaled nearly $6 million.
“These additional funds are very helpful when we are still dealing with a backlog of work from the many years before 2013, when we didn’t have the funding required to keep up with our infrastructure needs,” said Public Works Director Shan Gunawardena.
“I’m encouraged that we’re continuing to invest our resources in projects that will make a positive difference for residents and neighborhoods,” said Mayor Sharon Tucker. “It’s critical to maintain and enhance our local transportation system to position Fort Wayne as a quality-of-life leader and a great place for economic development opportunities.”
